Launched in 2005 and later acquired by Halewood Wines & Spirits in 2009, Whitley Neill has established itself as a distinguished brand in the gin market. The gin is meticulously distilled by Johnny Neill, a descendant of Thomas Greenall, utilising an antique copper pot still. This process incorporates a unique blend of botanicals, including two African ingredients – Baobab Fruit and Cape Gooseberries. The recipe also features coriander seeds, sweet lemon, sweet orange, angelica root, cassia bark, florentine iris, and juniper berries. The brand has expanded its range to include various flavoured gins. In 2021, Whitley Neill's distillation process was moved to London, specifically to Halewood's City of London Distillery. This relocation marked a significant change from its previous location just outside Birmingham in the West Midlands. The gin's packaging is also noteworthy, initially presented in a distinctive matte black bottle adorned with a stylised baobab tree logo, which underwent a redesign in 2013. The brand's excellence has been consistently recognised in various spirits competitions. In 2014, it garnered acclaim by winning a gold medal at the San Francisco Spirits Competition and was highlighted in The Telegraph Online as one of the top five gins to purchase. Its accolades include numerous awards: a Gold medal in the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Gin Master in the Super Premium Category at The Drinks Business Gin Masters Competition in 2013, and multiple gold medals in various categories at the International Spirits Challenge and International Wine & Spirit Competition across several years. Additionally, it has received high ratings and acknowledgments from the Beverage Testing Institute and The Spirits Business Awards, underlining its exceptional quality and standing in the spirits industry.
